Compared with their rivals, the ↑Republican Party, the Democrats are more liberal and have strong support from minorities and the trade/labor unions. The party began in 1792 as the Democratic Republican Party. Democratic Presidents have included Thomas Jefferson, Andrew ↑Jackson, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D Roosevelt, Harry S Truman, John F ↑Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. The traditional symbol for the party is the donkey.
